Join us to experience the island of Cyprus — an island Republic at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Cyprus is a member of the EU since 2004 and has one of the strongest economies in all of Europe.
The island's history that dates back 11,000 years is one of the oldest in the world and has bequeathed on the small island an enormously rich cultural heritage. Throughout the centuries, Cyprus had many conquerors, each leaving an idelible footprint.
Today Cyprus seamlessly blends ancient history, modern infrastructure and a contemporary lifestyle, all of which will be explored by Koula Sophianou, the Consul General of Cyprus to New York. Her presentation will be followed by an opportunity for questions and conversation, as well as a reception where some delicious Cypriot cuisine can be enjoyed.
Koula Sophianou comes from the occupied city of Famagusta. She studied at Purdue University in Indiana, where she received both her Bachelor (she was a recipient of a CASP-Cyprus America Scholarship Program) and Master of Arts degrees with honors. During her graduate years she worked as an instructor of Spanish at the Foreign Language Department of Purdue's Liberal Arts School.
Ms. Sophianou joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus in 1998. She served at the Protocol and Consular Affairs and the Political Affairs (International Organizations-Multilateral Affairs) Divisions of the Ministry respectively, until the summer of 2000 when she was posted to the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens. She held the post of Consul from 2000-2002 and later she dealt with Political Affairs until September 2003 when she was posted to Cyprus's Permanent Representation of the European Union.
She was responsible for the relations between Cyprus and the European Parliament. Returning to the Ministry in September 2007, she worked at the Cyprus Question and Turkey Division until November 2009, when she assumed the post of Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus in New York.
Ms. Sophianou is fluent in Greek, English and Spanish, has a good knowledge of French and passive knowledge of Italian.
