Join us for this discussion in our acclaimed Ambassador Series, when award-winning UN Correspondent Stephanie Fillion and Egypt's Ambassador to the United Nations H.E. Mr. Osama Abdelkhalek will talk about the current situation in the Middle East, and the role of Egypt in relationship with other states in the region.
H.E. OSAMA M. ABDELKHALEK
H.E. Mr. Osama Abdelkhalek became the Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nation on September 16, 2021.
Before his latest appointment, Ambassador Abdelkhalek served as Permanent Representative to the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) between October 2018 and August 2021.
Having been appointed Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs in July 2016, he was in charge of African affairs until October 2018. From July 2011 to July 2016, he was posted to the United Nations in New York as Deputy Permanent Representative, after having served as a counsellor in the Cabinet of the Minister for Foreign Affairs since June 2009.
Ambassador Abdelkhalek was also dispatched to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as Deputy Permanent Representative, serving between July 2005 and June 2009, and was Third Secretary in the Permanent Mission to the League of Arab States from October 1998 until January 2000.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Cairo University in 1988.
Born on 27 January 1966, Ambassador Abdelkhalek is married and has two children.
STEPHANIE FILLION
Stéphanie Fillion is a New York-based reporter specializing in foreign affairs and human rights and a United Nations correspondent. Her work was published in outlets like Forbes, Foreign Policy, Radio-Canada, La Stampa and the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun.
She has a masters degree in journalism, politics and global affairs from Columbia University and a BA in political science from McGill University.
In recent years, her UN coverage received two UN Correspondent Association awards as well as a Gracie award from the Alliance for Women in Media.
She writes in French, English and Italian.
