Come and join us for this UNA-NYC Members Only event, as we'll warmly welcome Consul General Georg Heindl, who will share hospitality as well as much information and insight into Austrian affairs and culture.

Austria has been a member of the United Nations since 1955. It is a parliamentary representative democracy comprising nine federal states, with a population exceeding 8.4 million, and with Vienna its capital and largest city. Austria is one of the richest countries in the world, with a nominal per capita GDP of $46,330 (2012 est.). The country has developed a high living standard, and was ranked 19th in the world for its Human Development Index (2011).

Austria joined the European Union in 1995, and is a founder of the OECD. Austria also signed the Schengen Agreement in 1995, and adopted the European currency (euro) in 1999.

One of the key functions of the Austrian Consulate General in New York is to support expatriates and visiting Austrians. The Consulate provides services regarding the issuing of passports and visas, as well as support for the networking efforts of Austrians who want to establish themselves in New York City and the Tri-State Region.

The area of jurisdiction of the consulate covers Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin as well as the British Overseas Territory Bermuda.

GEORGE HEINDL

Georg Heindl was born in Vienna in 1962. At age 4, he moved to New York where his father had become head of the Austrian Cultural Institute. In 1970, the family returned to Vienna.

On graduating from high school in 1980, he performed military service (reserve officer training), after which he studied law at the university of Vienna (1981-86). During his university years, he spent his vacations travelling to the U.S. and Israel (where he worked as a Kibbutz volunteer), as well as Spain (to study the language) and the Soviet Union. After university graduation in 1986, Heindl completed a year of postgraduate study at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium.

In 1987, he entered the Austrian Foreign Service. Since then he served as Attache at the Austrian Embassy in Dakar/Senegal; Embassy Secretary in Moscow and London; Secretary and Counsellor at the Austrian Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Vienna; and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy in Moscow. As Moscow Embassy Secretary (1989–92), he witnessed the upheavals which led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

From 2004-09, Heindl was Head of Division in the Department for Human Rights at the Austrian Foreign Ministry, responsible inter alia for national minorities, freedom of religion and the fight against racism. In 2009, he became Austrian Ambassador to Vietnam, a post he held until 2013. Since then, he has been the Austrian Consul General in New York.

Georg Heindl is married to Neline Koornneef, from the Netherlands. Together, they have two children, Matthas (b.2001) and Anna (b.2006).
