AMBASSADOR PETER MAURER

Ambassador Peter Maurer was appointed Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York in 2004. Prior to this assignment he served as Head of the Political Affairs Division IV, Human Security in the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs for four years. In 1981, Ambassador Maurer earned a degree in History, Political Science and Public International Law in Berne and Perugia. He served as a tutor and lecturer at the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Berne, and received his PhD in Contemporary History in 1983. Ambassador Maurer entered the diplomatic services of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in 1987, and was stationed at the Embassy of Switzerland in Pretoria from 1987-1988. From 1989-1990, he was the Desk Officer for Eastern Europe, Political Affairs Division I for the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in Berne. From 1990-1996, Ambassador Maurer served as the Secretary to the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs in Berne, and from 1996-2000 as Minister, Deputy Permanent Observer at the Swiss Mission to the United Nations in New York.


THOMAS D. ZWEIFEL

A CEO of the Swiss Consulting Group has coached hundreds of leaders in Fortune 500 companies, SME’s, non governmental organizations, governments, the UN and the military since 1984. Living in Europe, India, Japan and the United States, he has enabled large-scale change processes, built virtual high-performance teams, and realized breakthrough results for clients, often as a virtual leader working through remote empowerment. Thomas serves as a source of power for people to produce the results they want—from New York to Paris, from Geneva to Moscow, from Tel Aviv to Sydney. Thomas teaches leadership and cross-cultural management at Columbia University and at St. Gallen Business School (HSG). He publishes frequently on leadership and is the author of Culture Clash: Managing the High-Performance Team and Communicate or Die (both Select Books, 2003); Democratic Deficit? Institutions and Regulation in the European Union, Switzerland, and the United States (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002) and International Organiza-
tions: Democracy, Accountability, Power (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2005). In addition to his writing, Thomas speaks often in corporations, international organizations, and the media, most recently on ABC News and CNN. Born in Paris, Thomas was educated in Switzerland, Germany and the United States, and is fluent in English, German, French, and Italian. He holds a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in International Relations from New York University.

AMBASSADOR RAYMOND LORETAN

Ambassador Raymond Loretan was appointed Consul General of Switzerland in New York in August 2002. Prior to this assignment, he was Ambassador of Switzerland in the Republic of Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, for five years. In 1981, Ambassador Loretan earned a degree in Law at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. He received a diploma in 1979 from the Study Program on European Organization at the University of Strasbourg. While serving as Assistant Program Officer for Training and Programs at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, from 1981-1982, he was stationed in New York and The Hague. Ambassador Loretan entered the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1983 and the following year was sent to Paris for his internship. He then served as personal assistant to the Secretary of State, Edouard Brunner, from 1984 to 1987. From 1987 to1990, he was the personal assistant to the Swiss Federal Councilor, Arnold Koller, who was the Minister of Defense from 1987-1989, Minister of Justice from 1989-1990, and eventually President of the Swiss Confederation in 1990. After this, he decided to leave the Foreign Service to dedicate himself to various official tasks in Switzerland. He served as Counselor in European Affairs of the Canton of Valais from 1991-1992, and as Secretary General of the Swiss Christian Democratic Party from 1993-1997.
