Join us for this special UNA-NYC lecture with artist Cornelia Thomsen in honor of International Women’s Day 2018

From 1961 to 1989 the Berlin Wall divided a city and the world. February 5, 2018 marked the date on which the Wall has been down for as long as it once stood: 28 years. While today it may seem there is little to distinguish life in East and West Germany, some substantial differences remain.

Cornelia Thomsen spent the first 20 years of her life growing up in former East Germany, experiencing first-hand the indoctrinations of the GDR. The talk will focus on the role of women in socialist society, as well as on the role of art in the GDR system.

Thomsen will also illuminate the influence of these experiences on her art work and conclude with a closer look at Germany today, discussing the changes in East-West relations and the disparity in the regions' political and economic developments.
