It is estimated that each year nearly 1 million people, mostly women and children, are trafficked around the world living in slavery like conditions of forced labor and sexual exploitation. Traffickers use deception, force and coercion to move people into situations in which they are vulnerable. Gender discrimination, poverty, war and abuse drive millions of men, women and children to migrate for work, marriage or to escape untenable situations.
Professor Motoc will address the way in which human trafficking is defined, focusing on the clarification of the problems raised by the violation of human rights and tackling the legal responsibility of those who violate human rights. She will identify and promote the best practices that function in setting responsibility for human rights violations.

PROFESSOR IULIA MOTOC
Professor Motoc has studied law and philosophy. She has an LLB from the University of Bucharest, a Doctorate in Law from the University Aix-Marseille and a Doctorate in Philosophy. She is currently Professor of International Law at the University of Bucharest. She holds visiting academic positions with NYU School of Law and Yale University School of Law. She is the author of three books and co-author of a textbook of international law and several articles in the field of the use of the force, theory of international law, human rights, and ethics of international relations. Before joining the academia, she was judge at the Bucharest Court. Professor Motoc was UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights situation in Democratic Republic of Congo (2001-2004), member and former President of the Sub commission on Human Rights, member of the UN Working Group of Contemporary forms of slavery, and member of the Advisory
Committee on national minorities, Council of Europe. She is currently member of the UN Human Rights Committee.
