As the refugee crisis continues to spill onto European shores, George Kurian's film THE CROSSING is a vivid first-hand account of a perilous journey by a group of Syrian refugees.
THE CROSSING offers a direct witness to the discussions, risks and optimistic outlook of a group of Syrians as they plan their escape. Middle class, educated and full of life, these friends endure smugglers and police raids as they pack their kids and few belongings to enter the cold, dark waters of the unknown, traversing land and sea on an old fishing boat…
What no one anticipated, however, was the even more arduous path that awaited them in the EU. Through the endless bureaucracy of shelters and applications, they navigate countless hurdles, trying to rekindle friendships and community, each battling to stay sane and create an identity among the maze of regulations and new questions.
These refugees, like any group of individuals, come from diverse backgrounds and occupations. Some of them are journalists, some are teachers and musicians, but they are all bonded through a common desire for peace, even if it means being uprooted from their culture and their families. And after crossing a sea, two continents and five countries, they are searching for a home to rekindle the greatest thing they have lost: hope.
THE CROSSING takes us along on one of the most dangerous journeys of our time, and shows the lengths to which people go to find safety and forge their own destiny.
The film's bright spotlight on this subject has garnered much acclaim at many international film festivals this past year, and the United Nations Association of New York is proud to present this special screening of THE CROSSING. Please join us for this moving film, which will be followed afterwards by a special Q+A with guest Erin Dunne, the Engagement Manager for USA for UNHCR in New York.

ERIN DUNNE
Erin Dunne is currently serving as the Engagement Manager for USA for UNHCR in New York City, where she helps to better engage Americans around the refugee crisis.
Prior to her work with USA for UNHCR, Erin worked in Tanzania where she designed programs for UNICEF, at the UN Foundation on advocacy efforts and on Capitol Hill and CNN in Washington, D.C.
She is originally from Portland, Oregon and holds a Bachelors degree in Political Communications from Loyola University New Orleans.
