Have you ever wanted to work with refugees in an international context? Thought about what it was like to work with the High Commissioner for Refugees? Wondered about what life is like in the field?

Our Career Events offer you an opportunity to meet and speak with international personnel who can provide valuable advice while sharing their experiences.

We invite you to come learn about the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, some of the recruitment opportunities with the organization, and what to expect from life in the field — by spending an evening with a former UNHCR employee and experienced refugee rights advocate Livia Rurarz-Huygens.

Guest Speaker

LIVIA RURARZ-HUYGENS

While an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, Livia Rurarz-Huygens worked with the Lutheran Children and Family Services, an agency that helps newly arrived refugees get situated in their new country. She then went on to study Political Science at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, where she began working with UNHCR as an intern in the Resettlement and Gender Equality Units.

She was later posted by UNHCR to Lebanon and Kenya, where she worked in the resettlement units with refugees from some of the world's most conflict ridden areas including Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan and Congo. During her latest post in Nairobi, she specialized in children's rights and the Best Interest Determination for the child process. She is the author of Among the Asylum Seekers, a short piece on her experiences in Nairobi.
