UNA-NYC Special Panel of Extraordinary Women Offer Perspectives on Ending Child Marriage
On September 19, 2016, UNA-NYC held a special panel on ending child marriages, at the Netherlands Mission to the UN. Joining us that evening were five passionate and extraordinary women who each contributed her own vital perspectives on ending child marriage globally, an issue which threatens girls' lives and health, and limits their future prospects. Despite laws against it, the practice remains widespread, in part because of persistent poverty and gender inequality. In developing countries, one in every three girls is married before reaching age 18, and one in nine is married under age 15.
