The United Nations Association of New York Honors Women at 2011 Spring Luncheon
On May 11, for its annual spring luncheon The United Nations Association of New York proudly honored the special achievements of women for their work to end human trafficking.
The event, Making a Difference: Women Who Care, was held in the Delegates Dining Room at the UN Headquarters. The attendees warmly welcomed presentations by the selected honorees: Ruchira Gupta, the Founder and President of Apne Aap Women Worldwide, a grassroots organization in India working to end sex trafficking, as well as The Junior League, the pioneering organization of women volunteers committed to civic leadership training to benefit communities worldwide, represented by President Delly Beekman.
After a salutary welcome from UNANYC's Executive Director Ann Nicol, there were opening remarks from President Paula Rice Jackson, followed by the keynote address, delivered by Vishakha Desai, President and CEO of The Asia Society. After the presentation of the awards, additional remarks were delivered by Pamela Chen, Chief of the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York.
The luncheon received a warm send-off in the closing performance offered by the UN Singers.
The United Nations Association of New York extends special thanks and appreciation to author Thrity Umrigar, and to HarperCollins Publishers, for their generosity in providing copies of her book, The Space Between Us, for the occasion.
