Continuing to Support the UN’s Humanitarian Work in Ukraine
Over two months since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24th, more than 7.7 million people have been internally displaced and 5.6 million refugees have fled the country, according to UN OCHA.
In the wake of devastation and loss, the UN has been instrumental in providing humanitarian aid to the millions of Ukrainians affected by the ongoing crisis. The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Osnat Lubrani, has highlighted the four key principles guiding the UN’s humanitarian assistance: humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence. “Our aim is always to provide the most vulnerable civilians with critical humanitarian relief supplies and services, regardless of who or where they are,” she assured in a statement.
With UN Secretary-General António Guterres meeting with both the Ukrainian and Russian leaders in their respective countries, the UN’s commitment to a diplomatic solution remains strong. Until peace is reached, however, the people of Ukraine remain in dire need of humanitarian aid and assistance.
