SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
What New York City is Doing
Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence (ENDGBV)
Established in 2001, ENDGBV leads the city’s efforts to tackle intimate partner violence; in 2018, its responsibilities were expanded to include tackling sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking.
Women Entrepreneurs NYC (WE NYC)
Set up by the New York City Department of Small Business Services, WE NYC “is dedicated to helping women start and grow their businesses.”
Free universal pre-K
Free pre-K tackles poverty by enables parents, and especially mothers, to work more hours—without having to pay for childcare. Since its introduction, the number of children in pre-K in New York City has more than quadrupled.
Executive Order 21
Order 21 outlaws city departments from inquiring about job applicants’ salary history, an important step in closing the gender pay gap.
Feminine Hygiene Products Access Laws
The city has a variety of local laws (including Int 1122-2016, Int 1123-2016, and Int 1128-2016) intended to increase access to vital feminine hygiene products for student, shelter residents, and inmates in the city.
