This evening's special panel discussion features a select group of participating Ambassadors from several ASEAN countries (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), who will discuss their political systems and trends currently in the regional ASEAN mix, as well as topics of recent history, the increasing momentum of their countries' economic developments, and their status as international players on the world stage.
The ten countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations covers a land area of 4.4 million km., 3% of the total land area of the earth and represents a collective market of 620 million people, 8.8% of the world's population. They are home to a young, large, and growing labor pool, as well as a developing and increasingly consumption-oriented middle class. In 2012, ASEAN countries combined GDP was over $2.2 trillion, and many economists expect that number to double by 2020. ASEAN's five core countries — Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand — have been growing as fast as any other regional grouping in the world over the past five years.

AMBASSADOR KYAW TIN
The Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations, Ambassador Kyaw Tin presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in September of 2012.
Before that appointment, Mr. Tin was Myanmar's Ambassador to Canada from March 2011. Between October 2008 and March 2011, he served as Director-General of the Political Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Yangon, having been Deputy Director-General from 2007 to 2008, and Director of the South and West Asia Division from 2005 to 2006. He was Chargé d'affaires at his country's Embassy in Ottawa from February to October 2005.
Ambassador Tin served as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission in New York (2003-05), and as Deputy Chief of Mission/Counsellor in Jakarta (2001-03). He was Deputy Director of the International Organizations and Economic Department (1999-2001), having served as Assistant Director (1997-99). From 1994 to 1997, he was First Secretary/Second Secretary at Myanmar's Permanent Mission in Geneva. Prior to that, he headed Branch 1 of the International Organizations and Economic Department (1991-94), having served as Second Secretary at the Embassy in Bangkok (1987-91).
Before his appointment as Deputy Assistant Director of International Organizations and Economic Department from 1986 to 1987, Mr. Tin was Third Secretary at the New York Permanent Mission (1984-86), Deputy Assistant Director of the International Organizations Division (1983-84), and Chancellor in Canberra (1982-83).
Ambassador Tin holds a Master of Science in mathematics from Yangon University and a post-graduate diploma in environmental management from Dresden University of Technology in Germany.
Born in 1955 in Wuntho, Myanmar, he is married and has children.
AMBASSADOR DESRA PERCAYA
Ambassador Desra Percaya is an Indonesian diplomat and current Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York, since February 2012.
Prior to that, he was his country's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was also accredited to the World Trade Organization and other international organizations based there.
Ambassador Percaya has held a variety of posts related to multilateral diplomacy and international security since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986, most recently that of Director of International Security and Disarmament in the Directorate of Multilateral Affairs in Jakarta (2007-09).
From 2007 to 2008, he was the Ministry's Spokesperson on UN Security Council issues, after having served as Spokesperson and Chief of Staff in the Office of the Minister (2005-07). His foreign service includes previous postings at Indonesia's Permanent Mission in New York as Head of Political Affairs/Minister Counsellor (2003-05), and Head of Political Affairs/Counsellor (2002-03).
Between 2000 and 2002, Mr. Percaya was Special Adviser to the Director-General for Political Affairs on Aceh, in the Foreign Ministry, serving during the same period as Head of the sub-Directorate for Human Rights in the Ministry's International Organizations Directorate. His earliest postings to the United Nations were as an Attaché, Third Secretary and Second Secretary at Indonesia's Permanent Mission in Geneva (1990-94).
Ambassador Percaya holds a doctorate in political science from Durham University and a master's degree in international relations from Birmingham University, both in the United Kingdom, as well as a graduate diploma from the Institute of International Studies in Geneva and a bachelor's degree in social and political sciences from Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia.
Born in Malang, Indonesia in 1961, he is married and has two children.
AMBASSADOR KAREN TAN
Ambassador Karen Tan is currently appointed as Singapore's Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Born in 1964, Ms. Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History, Second Class Honours (Upper Division) from the University of London in 1985. She obtained a Master of Science in European Studies (with Distinction) from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London in 1993.
Since joining the Foreign Service in 1985, Ambassador Tan served as First Secretary in the Singapore Embassy in Paris (1989-92), and as Counsellor and subsequently Deputy Permanent Representative at the Singapore Permanent Mission to the UN in New York (1997-99). She was Singapore's Ambassador to the Lao People's Democratic Republic (2004-07), and Singapore's Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization in Geneva and to the World Intellectual Property Organization (2007-10). Prior to her current appointment, Ms. Tan was Singapore's High Commissioner to the Republic of India with concurrent accreditation as Singapore's Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bhutan and the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal (2011-13).
At the Headquarters, she held various appointments including Senior Deputy Director of Policy Planning and Analysis Directorate IV (South Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America and International Organisations), Director of Human Resource and Director of Policy, Planning and Analysis Directorate II (North America and Europe).
Ambassador Tan was awarded the Long Service Medal in 2011.
DAVID G. TIMBERMAN
David G. Timberman is a political analyst and international development practitioner with 30 years of experience analyzing and addressing political and governance challenges, principally in Southeast and South Asia.
As a Technical Director at Management Systems International he manages and conducts governance and conflict-related analytical work for USAID, the State Department and other clients. He has served as a senior advisor for democracy and governance programs for USAID in Indonesia and Washington, DC.
Dr. Timberman also has held positions with the Asia Society, the Asia Foundation and the Chase Bank. He has written extensively on political and governance issues in the Philippines, Cambodia and Indonesia.
He holds a MA in International Affairs from Columbia University, as well as a BA in political science and history from Tufts University.
