Only two journalists were killed in World War I. Sixty-three journalists were killed in World War II. In the last two decades almost a journalist a week has been killed, with the dead numbering in the thousands. The conclusions are obvious. Journalism in times of war has become an increasingly lethal endeavor — and extremely traumatic — as journalists are now viewed as natural targets by combatants, subject to kidnapping, torture and even beheadings.
With journalists facing these new realities, UNDER FIRE: JOURNALISTS IN COMBAT weaves together combat footage and first-hand accounts by the journalists who were there to reveal what they see, think and feel as they confront the physical danger and savagery of war. While Variety reported that "UNDER FIRE reckons with its subject in straightforward but engrossingly tough-minded fashion," The Christian Science Monitor's Peter Rainer asked, "Is it worth it in the end to lose your life for a picture? An even larger question: How moral is it to depict as a profession the suffering of others? The fame and honor that sometimes come with their work do not seem to be the motivating forces behind these men and women."
Following our screening of this 2012 Academy Award short-listed film by Martyn Burke, we will have a discussion with reporter David Rohde.

DAVID ROHDE
David Rohde is an American author and investigative journalist for Thomson Reuters. While a reporter for The Christian Science Monitor, he won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1996 for his coverage of the Srebrenica massacre. From July 2002 until December 2004, he was co-chief of the Times' South Asia bureau, based in New Delhi, India. He shared a second Pulitzer Prize for Times 2008 team coverage of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
One unenviable yet remarkable career highlight: while in Afghanistan, Rohde was kidnapped by members of the Taliban in November 2008. He managed to escape in June 2009 after seven months in captivity.
