Please join us at our Annual Meeting, where UNA-NYC will celebrate our collective accomplishments over the past year, and when we will warmly welcome our special guest speaker, Ambassador Bob Jalang'o who will make an important address this evening.
Ambassador Jalang'o brings diverse experiences in political, diplomatic and private sector fields, and vast knowledge of Africa's cultural and ethnic differences. He is an expert on the role of the United Nations in the prevention and mitigation of Africa's conflicts, and from personal history and experiences, he has been able to provide audiences with an opportunity to attain a deeper understanding of Africa.
Tonight, he will speak about the refugee situation in the Dadaab region in Kenya, addressing many specific aspects of the conditions and issues that exist in the camps, especially those related to education, and will also provide an overview of the work that has been done so far and more importantly, what still needs to be accomplished.
We expect many of our New York chapter members will want to take advantage of this special occasion to hear the ambassador's presentation this evening — especially since UNA-NYC has just recently announced our chapter's involvement to help support the UNA-USA Adopt-a-Future campaign, and in particular, our commitment to the Furaha School in Dadaab. In which case, we warmly invite all members and their guests to bring their questions for Ambassador Jalang'o and their aspirations of support this evening.

AMBASSADOR BOB JALANG'O
For nearly 40 years, Ambassador Bob F. Jalang'o has traveled all over the world in different high level capacities: as a diplomatic representative of Kenya as well as an elected member of Kenya's legislature, as a private sector senior executive, and as an adjunct professor in African Studies.
Mr. Jalang'o served as Ambassador of Kenya to three Central African countries of Zambia, Malawi and Botswana for four years, then served as Ambassador to Italy, Greece, Poland and the UN Agencies in Rome for another four years before being posted to the United Nations in December 2000 as Permanent Representative of Kenya. While in Rome and New York he represented Kenya on the conflicts in Sudan and Somalia.
Mr. Jalang'o has also served as an adjunct professor at New York University's African Studies Center (2007–2009), where he offered a course on the role of UN in the prevention and mitigation of Africa's conflicts. During this period, he was also Coordinator of the Ambassador in Residence Program for Africana Studies. In this capacity, he organized monthly meetings at which UN Ambassadors were invited to speak to students and faculty on their experiences with the role of UN in conflict resolution.
Following the conclusion of his diplomatic service at the UN in New York, Ambassador Jalang'o embarked on promoting Africa as a public speaker through his seminars and lectures on the role of United Nations in global governance, and supporting UN Model clubs in colleges. These programs explored different African cultures, embodying the concept of diversity to help ease racial tensions in schools between students of different backgrounds, and prepared to remove negative misrepresentations of Africa popularly held by many outsiders.
Prior to his diplomatic service, Mr. Jalang'o was elected to Kenya's Legislature and represented a rural constituency in western Kenya on the shores of the beautiful Lake Victoria from 1988-1983. He represented Kenya as a member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary group, Kenya's representative to trade negotiations European Union and African, Caribbean and pacfic countries (ACP-EU Lome trade Agreements), chairman of Public Accounts committee and a member of a parliamentary Task Force to investigate tribal clashes that rocked the Rift Valley and Western Kenya regions in 1991.
Ambassador Jalang'o was initially trained in information technology and worked in the private sector for 14 years as IT Manager for Caltex Services Mid-Africa and Caltex Oil Kenya Ltd (an American based petroleum company providing marketing and other services in six Eastern and Central African countries). This was the beginning of his travels within Africa and internationally.
In his spare time, Ambassador Jalang'o has been actively involved in volunteer work as a board member American Red Cross of Tompkins county; Advisory council member of Retired and Senior volunteer Program, a Family Mediator with Community Dispute and Resolution Center and a mentor to middle school students.
